CANTON, Ohio – SEPT. 2, 2022 – Hall of Fame Village (“HOFV”) today announces that it will add a Canton Symphony Orchestra pre-show performance of “Soulful Sounds” before Rock and Roll Hall of Famers The O’Jays with special guest, Gladys Knight take the stage at its Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. The O’Jays are coming to town along with special guest Gladys Knight as part of the Canton band’s “Last Stop on The Love Train: The Final Tour” concert at 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 17.
Before the show, members of the Canton Symphony Orchestra will take the stage at 6 p.m. for a 45-minute performance of “Soulful Sounds,” a collection of popular R&B and Soul songs from the 60s and 70s, to set the mood for the rest of the evening.
“It’s an honor for the Canton Symphony Orchestra to be part of such a unique and special concert experience in performing Soulful Sounds before these two legendary R&B acts take the stage for one last tour together,” said Michelle Charles, Canton Symphony Orchestra’s president and CEO. “We would like to dedicate our performance in particular as a welcome home to Canton’s O’Jays, who created a soulful sound all their own.”
“Having the Canton Symphony Orchestra develop such a natural musical accompaniment with some of its members for this occasion is such a wonderful way to round out our homecoming programming for these hall of fame performers,” said Vic Gregovits, HOFV executive vice president of sales and marketing.
The “Last Stop on The Love Train: The Final Tour” concert then will open with seven-time Grammy Award winner and ‘The Empress of Soul’, Gladys Knight performing her top hits including “Midnight Train to Georgia,” “Neither One of Us,” “I Heard it Through the Grapevine” and “Love Overboard”. Gladys Knight and The Pips were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. Knight will be among the 2022 Kennedy Center Honorees in December.
The O’Jays, originally from Canton and led by original members Eddie Levert Sr., Walter Williams Sr., and Eric Grant (who joined the group in 1995) headline what will be their final concert tour. “This tour is a celebration of all of our lives and the struggles and joys that got us to today. It is time for us to say goodbye and we would like to do it in person. Please come join us as we play the music we have shared together over the past 60 years, one last time,” Canton native Eddie Levert Sr. reflected.
The O’Jays will delve into their deep catalog of hits including "Backstabbers," “Love Train,” “For The Love of Money,” “Livin’ For The Weekend” and “Use Ta Be My Girl.” The O’Jays have earned 10 Gold albums, nine Platinum albums, 10 #1 hits and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame and Hall of Fame Village together will donate five dollars for each concert ticket sold to the O’Jays Scholarship Fund which supports college bound Ohio students.
